Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo.  It struck my fancy.

Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo, it stuck my fancy AND rocked my world.
Batiste Dry Shampoo product review - It Struck My Fancy

My history with dry shampoo

Dry shampoo usage is a science.  I found that when I used dry shampoo I needed to be ultra strategic in the application of the dry shampoo in order to not look like I was trying to look like I was in a school play where they sprayed the kids hair grey to make them look old.  If I applied it like a hair spray I would get a lovely white hue in my quite dark locks.  I had read you just need to wait for it to absorb a bit and then massage it in.  For me, I could still see the dullness in my hair from the product.   In order to try to combat this issue, I would make sure that I:
only applied it where I tend to get the most oil in my hair
parted my hair in sections and sprayed it under the top layer of my hair so that I would lessen the white effect (residue).
never waited until I really “needed” it.

How I apply dry shampoo

I think the biggest thing with dry shampoo, in my experience, is to not wait until your hair is dirty or oily.  Say I washed my hair this morning and I knew I wanted to avoid shampooing again tomorrow, I would apply the dry shampoo that night before bed (or right after drying my hair after washing it).  This would absorb the oil as it was produced vs. trying to absorb it once it was there and noticeable.  Any time I had applied dry shampoo to my dirty, oily hair it only looked slightly better, and I would have that white hue issue.
This happened because it is hard to not apply it directly to the area near my ears, whereas I can easily move my part on the top of my head, spray and then brush the non-sprayed hair over that.  I found that I could give the product more time to lessen the white hue if I did it at night and was able to then brush it through again the next morning.  After struggling with this, I began using the product RIGHT after washing and drying my hair.  Sounds strange, but I find it is when the product works best.  All in all, not always worth applying it when my hair looks oily since it is usually just easier to stick my head in the sink and wash it.

The discovery of Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo

Now, on to my discovery of tinted dry shampoo.
I was out with my daughter at a quick run in to Walgreens.  I cannot remember what we were there for, but we were in the hair section and she spotted the Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo Divine Dark dry shampoo and told me that her friend raved about it and she wanted to try it.  It was on sale, although still seemed a bit expensive to me.  Being the wonderful mother than I am I bought it for her.  Like me, she has dark hair and doesn’t like having to wash it as often as she probably needs to.

The curiosity was killing me, so when she was at camp I tried it myself.  I was so pleased to NOT have the white hue!  If you get a bit too heavy handed with it, you may find a hue left on your hair, but not like the other stuff I used, and it isn’t a white hue.  My hair is what I would call “darkest brown” and I noticed that it looked a little lighter.  Maybe a bit flatter looking (in terms of shine).  Not for long.  A good brush through and I was good!
I went to Target the next night and bough a can myself.  It was the first time I did price matching at Target because it was a dollar less with the sale at Walgreens. Again, this product is not the least expensive out there.  The tinted versions run a good dollar more a can.

Batiste Dry Shampoo Tropical

Since the discovery of Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo, I was curious about their less expensive, non tinted versions.  I bought the Tropical scented one for my middle daughter.  She loves the smell of the product, it smells like coconut.  I also opted on this for her because her hair is not quite so dark.  I think perhaps we could get her the medium and dark tinted version.   When it is applied, you do get that white hue, so right there I was not as impressed with the product.  It does seem to work well and since she applied it the night before, the white hue was not so much an issue.

Batiste Dry Shampoo Blush

Onward to their other scent of the non scented Batiste Dry Shampoo that they had at Walmart.  I bought the Blush scent for my youngest daughter who naturally can go a day or two without shampooing. She has even lighter hair than my other two daughters so this seemed a good option, she could probably use a can of the medium tinted version.  This is a really nice scent as well (floral) and I have used this product on my own hair.  The white hue is also present when you apply, but if you apply it the way I explain below it works fine.  I really did like how nice my hair smelled with this scent.

How I use Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo

The technique

Here is what I do.  Use this technique for any type of dry shampoo you use and you will have better results.
Wash and dry hair
Lightly spray around ears and temples (where I have most of my oil issue)
Part hair about an inch from where you wear your part and spray
Go down another inch or so and do it there
Spray using this technique around your head
Avoid spraying it on the top most layer of your hair
Give your hair a good brush through and I you’re DONE

The first day

Using the above technique to apply the Batiste Hint of Color (or any) dry shampoo improves how it works.  Mainly I believe it is a better way to use the product because you are going to absorb oil while it is being produced rather than trying to absorb it after the fact.  I find that if it looks like you need dry shampoo, it’s too late…just wash your hair.   When you do not spray the top layer of your hair, it reduces your chance of seeing any dull looking hair from the product.  You may be worried that if you don’t spray there it won’t work.  It will, it absorbs into that area anyway.
If you don’t want to put the product on your freshly washed hair, then you can opt to apply Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo before you go to bed that same day.

The next day and beyond

Second day hair, never thought I’d advocate for it.  I never had good, second day hair.  I do now!  On the second day when I am doing my hair (which is just brushing it) I do the same thing as the day before.  I probably used less product throughout   I have gone THREE days without shampooing my hair and it still looked pretty darn good on day three!  I’d say that although it looked good, the ends just didn’t feel great and I need to shave my legs pretty bad by day three anyway so off to shower I go.
On those other days you may wonder about the not showering thing.  I don’t shower everyday.  I just don’t.  Don’t feel I need to.  There are five other people in this house that will tell me if I smell and they have not said a thing.  I do keep up on my personal hygiene during those non-shower days, so no worries people.

Final thoughts

Batiste Dry Shampoo product review - It Struck My Fancy
{LOVE} Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo.  It is so worth the extra money (more expensive compared to the brands I have tried).  I have not tried any other tinted dry shampoo brands and I just don’t feel like I need to since Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo- Divine Dark works SO well and smells very nice.  The only negatives I have found other than the price is that if you spray it too close to your face, you may find the over-spray on your face to be noticeable.
Be careful during application near your face and be prepared to wipe your face off.  I mention this because you may want to not use it AFTER you have done your makeup.  The other negative is that if you scratch your when you use this product, you will have brown ick under your nails.  Maybe try the non tinted kind like the Tropical or Blush.  I have, although I actually want some of that tint on my head as I will explain next.

Bonuses to using this product

A few bonus things about Batiste Hint of Color Dry Shampoo- Divine Dark , is that it does seem to add some volume to my quite thin hair.  I also have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and one of the symptoms I have is that my hair seems to be thinning even more than when I was young.  Like, I am at the point that I tried Rogaine.  I mostly notice that I can sorta see my scalp.  SOOOOO, if I am feeling self-conscious about it I will actually spray that area close to my scalp to tint my scalp a bit, nice little bonus.  Just have to find a good technique for that, I am practicing daily.

it works
OK brunettes of the world…run, don’t walk to get yourself a can of this amazing stuff!  Non brunettes, they have a solution for you as well.  Check it out!
